Preventive Care / Vaccinations
Regular wellness exams are one of the most important things you can do to keep your cat healthy. We recommend wellness exams at least once a year until the age of 10. Once your cat reaches 10 years of age, we recommend an exam every six months.
One of the most important reasons to bring your cat in on a regular basis is to monitor and treat conditions before they become untreatable. Since cats cannot verbally tell us how they are feeling, illness or disease may be present before you are aware of symptoms. The benefit of early detection allows time to manage or correct a problem before it becomes too severe. Because our cats age so much faster than we do, regular wellness exams are one of the best ways you can help your cat live a long, healthy life.
During a wellness exam, Dr. Cacciottoli will perform a complete physical exam and ask questions related to your cat’s health. It is helpful to know how much they are eating, what kind of food you feed, and if they have done any vomiting or had loose or hard stools. If a problem is found, we will discuss diagnostic tests to help us determine the cause and recommend a treatment plan.
Vaccines may also be given if they are due. We recommend bringing a stool sample to look for intestinal parasites at least once per year. After the age of 10, we recommend blood work at least once per year including a complete blood cell count, chemistry to look at organ function, and thyroid level. Every cat should be tested for FIV/Felv at least once. This is usually done when a new cat is acquired or when cats go outside.
My cat is indoors only, do they still need vaccinations?
Yes! Rabies vaccination is required for all cats indoors and outdoors. Bats are the main source of rabies in Missouri and they can get into houses or apartments. Indoor cats can also be infected by other diseases as people and other pets do go in and out of the house. If you pet a cat outside your home that is sick, you can unknowingly bring that illness home to your own cat.
At what age should my kitten be vaccinated?
Kittens should start their vaccine series at eight weeks of age. They receive vaccines every four weeks after that until they are at least sixteen weeks of age.
Should my cat be on a flea preventative?
For the most part, the answer is yes. Even indoor cats can get fleas.
Fleas can jump up to about 20 feet and can get inside on people’s shoes and clothes or on a dog that goes in and out of the house. The flea prevention we recommend is Revolution Plus which also protects against heartworms (spread by mosquitos), roundworms, hookworms, ticks, and ear mites.
We recommend flea prevention be used at least April through November when temperatures are high enough for them to be outside.
How much should I feed my cat?
It depends on the size of the cat.
For most average sized (10-12 pound) cats, they need about 200 calories per day to maintain their body weight. You can look on your bag or can of food for the calorie content of the food you are feeding.
